Tutorials

In addition to the mandatory Monday lectures, you are also required to attend one tutorial each week. Failure to regularly attend tutorials may result in your being poorly prepared for the examination at semester's end. As mentioned above, it will also mean a loss of one mark per session. Tutorials consist of groups of about 20 students meeting face-to-face in a smaller room to discuss, with avidity and occasional mirth, the contents of lectures and readings for the week's topic(s). You will be provided with focus and discussion questions prior to each meeting (check your reader and Cecil). You should keep these questions in mind and think about them as you do your reading. Some time in tutorials will also be devoted to helping you develop and sharpen your research and writing skills. Because of timetabling and room allocation difficulties, we will only know for certain at the end of week 1 when and where the tutorials being held in pool rooms will be offered. You will be able to sign up for your preferred tutorial time using Cecil during the first week, with the first formal tutorials taking place in week 2. At the beginning of the semester, all students are encouraged to make use of the Student Learning Centre for orientation to the Library, Cecil, and general study and essay-writing advice.
