Workload
The University of Auckland expects students enrolled in 15 point courses to spend a total of 150 hours on the course. This includes attendance in class, preparation for tutorials, time spent on coursework and studying for the final exam.
Preparation and submission of essays
Essay titles will be given out in Week 3.
To assist your essay writing, you will also be given
- A Style Sheet with examples on how to write bibliography and give footnotes or endnotes
- A Grade Descriptor showing you how your essays will be assessed
You will be given more guidance during tutorials.
Plagiarism and academic honesty
The School of Asian Studies has a strict policy on plagiarism. You need to hand in TWO copies of your essay, one the conventional hard copy, and the other is an electronic copy to be submitted via Turnitin.com.
You will be given separate instructions entitled ‘Student Guidelines for Turnitin.com: What it is, and how to use it’.
There is some more information available here.
The electronic submission is an important part of the assessment process, and essays will not be marked until BOTH copies are received. You will still be able to submit your essay to the website after the due date, but you may have marks detracted by the lecturer unless you have obtained an extension in advance. Any essay found to have plagiarised portions will receive a 0 mark. You will not be allowed to resubmit any essay.
The University of Auckland will not tolerate cheating, or assisting others to cheat, and views cheating in coursework as a serious academic offence. The work that a student submits for grading must be the student’s own work, reflecting his or her learning. Where work from other sources is used, it must be properly acknowledged and referenced. This requirement also applies to sources on the world-wide web. A student’s assessed work may be reviewed against electronic source material using computerised detection mechanisms. Upon reasonable request, students may be required to provide an electronic version of their work for computerised review.
Cover sheet and formatting
A School of Asian Studies cover sheet (available on CECIL) must be signed, completed and attached to every piece of work submitted. All hard copies of assignments should be placed in the Stage 1 box on Level 3, 58 Symonds Street, by 4 p.m. on the due date.
When writing your essay on a computer please use 12pt font size, double-spaced. Take care with footnotes and bibliography.
Late work
The School of Asian Studies expects all Stage I students to hand in work by the due date and time. It is important to plan your work in this and other courses to enable you to meet the deadlines given. If this is not possible, you MUST contact your tutor before the work is due and apply for an extension. If the extension is sought on medical grounds or misadventure you may be required to provide a supporting medical certificate.
Sending your tutor an e-mail minutes before an assignment is due is not the same as being granted an extension. It is expected that you will arrange to see your tutor in person to put your case for an extension. At the very least you must have an e-mail from your tutor confirming that you have an extension until a set time and date. Late work without permission of extension will be penalised.
