Han Yu

Han Yu (768-824) was a writer and poet of the mid Tang dynasty. He was opposed to Buddhism, which was then flourishing, and attempted to encourage a revival of Confucianism. He employed a neo-classical style of writing which rejected the stylistic artificial formality of the prose of the time in favour of a more straightforward, classic mode of expression. His influence was such that this style was adopted widely for literary, scholarly and political writing.
