This paper provides an introduction to the history of feature filmmaking, and presents some of the main traditions of film theory and criticism. Over the semester students will become acquainted with the basic concepts of Film Studies, gain an appreciation for the depth and richness of film history, and acquire critical analytical and viewing skills. There will be an emphasis on the study of genre, auteur theory, representation and the historical development of the technical elements of film construction. There will also be considerable emphasis placed on the importance of developing and refining strong reading, writing and oral skills. The tutoring and assessment processes of this course are designed to enable students to achieve and demonstrate their language and analytical capabilities within the discipline. The successful completion of this course and of FTVMS 100 demonstrates that the student has acquired the skills necessary to undertake courses at stage 2. It is also the first step in acquiring academic and literacy competencies that enable students to meet the requirements of the graduate profile in their final year of undergraduate study.
