Marking Criteria and Grading Scale
Evidence demonstrated of the following skills;
- Student has read and understood the question
- Essay based upon close and specific analysis, not just generalised observation
- Has used and/or understood material presented in lectures and recommended readings
- Able to think independently and apply the concepts presented in class and in the readings to a range of film contexts
- Essay answers all requirement of the question
- Essay is well structured and there is a logical organisation of ideas and examples
- Competent use of sentence and paragraph structure.
- Few, if any mistakes, in spelling and grammar.
- An ability to discuss both technical and aesthetic aspects of filmmaking
- An understanding of the technical and social context of the original film text
- Able to use concise examples to illustrate analysis
- That considerable care has been put in to the writing, drafting and final presentation of the essay
- Accurate referencing within the essay and a bibliography indicating the use of any secondary sources.

A few areas may not be as strong as others but overall quality competent and all requirements of the assignment completed and understood. Relevant literature referenced where appropriate. Work overall displays competencies in critical thinking, writing and presentation. Close to the word limit specified. |

Evidence of creative ability and critical thinking present but limited at times. Understands and completes all aspects of the assignment as required. May be too far under or over the word limit. |

At the lower end does not attempt to interpret the material and indicates a need for considerable effort to achieve improvement. May have provided material outside the parameters of the assignment. Considerable lapses in grammar, spelling, structure and clarity. Word limit not met. |
